Berry Tramel (NewsOK) talks to Billy Donovan about the earthquake that precipitated the big earthquake that shook the Thunder: “Sitting there, next thing I know, the doors start swinging open and closed,” Donovan said. “I’m like, ‘OK, now it feels like the whole building is getting ready to tip over.’ I’ve been in a few subtle earthquakes here. Not like that. So I go to the window, because I actually felt like the building was swaying. You look out the window, it’s not moving. So I kind of went downstairs.”
Dan Devine (The Ringer) on whether the Miami Heat should trade for Chris Paul: “It’s worth wondering, though, how well Paul would fit with the other famed hard-ass the Heat just imported. Jimmy Butler could have secured a full five-year bag to run it back as one of several stars on the 76ers; instead, he took a four-year, $140.8 million contract to be the unquestioned no. 1 option for a Heat franchise that hasn’t won 50 games in a season or made it out of the second round since LeBron James left town. Now, if they brought in Paul, Miami would be adding another max-salaried marquee player whose bids for glory in both Los Angeles and Houston came up short after grumblings emerged about the “mentoring” he offered to his costars. Is Butler—no stranger to, um, complicated exits himself—going to be on board with sharing the spotlight he thought he would have all to himself? (Also, for what it’s worth: As I’ve written, I’m optimistic that a healthy version of what’s already in the Heat locker room might be good enough to be the third or fourth seed in the East. Would a 34-year-old CP3 make them a legit contender on par with the Bucks and 76ers at the top of the conference? I’m skeptical.)”
Ben DuBose (Rockets Wire) on former teammates praising Russell Westbrook as a teammate (Oooooohhhh, so now you guys got nice things to say about Russ?): “Now with the Houston Rockets, Westbrook was recently referred to by former Thunder big man Enes Kanter as the “best player” and “best teammate” that he’s ever had in the NBA. It certainly appears that Abrines and McGary agree with much of that assessment.”
Berry Tramel (NewsOK) on the steadiness Billy Donovan has had to show this offseason: “One, I don’t worry about it,” Donovan said. “I try to look at is as, you know what, this is the team we have and this is the team we’re going with. I’m sure Sam and the front-office guys … are all working on those things. But my approach is, this is going to be our team for the year. If those things end up happening, they happen. Even in talking to Sam, it’s been almost like, ‘hey listen, this is going to be our team this year.’ Could things happen? Yeah. A lot of things could happen. But I just go in with the year like this is our team and we’re going to be together for the whole year and how good can we become as a group?”
Sam Amick (The Athletic) spoke with NBA commissioner Adam Silver about cracking down on tampering: “Just to be clear there, there was definitely some suggestions from people that were reported that were inconsistent with what we were telling our teams. For a long time, whether people agree or disagree, (he has) always said, “We’re not looking, nor do we have the right, to monitor player to player conversations.” If two players are going out to dinner and say, “Boy, wouldn’t it be great to play in City X together?” That’s not something we’re looking to go after. The only context in which we raised player-to-player communication is where we have a belief that a player is being sent out at the behest of the team to have a conversation with another player that the team itself could not have with that player. In essence, where a player is acting as an agent for the team, and then saying to the player, “What do you think about the following scenario, with the confidence that this is something that my team is willing to do?”
Shams Charania (The Athletic) says the Heat have a level of interest in obtaining Chris Paul: “The Heat have a level of interest in Oklahoma City’s Chris Paul entering the NBA season, league sources said. Paul had shared a strong mutual interest in ending up in Miami after his trade to the Thunder — but the sides could not agree to a deal and now OKC and Paul are prepared to enter training camp with CP3 in the role of veteran star and leader. Paul has three years and $124 million left on his deal. Miami will likely elect to see how it starts the season before gauging a new pursuit of Paul, which would take several large contracts to match salary.”
Shaun Powell (NBA.com) previews the Oklahoma City Thunder: “Presti made the most of the situation, setting OKC up very nicely in the future by stockpiling seven first-round picks from the Clippers and Rockets (two originally belonging to Miami) along with four first-round swaps. That’s quite a haul, and should either the Clippers or Rockets falter between now and 2026, OKC could score big. If nothing else, the Thunder can package those picks in future deals. Basically, Presti has options, which is the best he could ask.”
