Ranking Every All-Star Introduction from Common

Pretty wild change of pace for the NBA All-Star introductions as Common went to his bag for some … interesting … rhymes. Personally, I liked the rhymes but thought it was too much for an introduction part of the game but it seems like the internet liked it. To each his own. Anyway, here’s my ranking of each introduction, categorized by conference and reserves/starters.

Eastern Conference

Reserves

7) “Either way he’ll getchu” = Donovan Mitchell

This batch was tough, and this had to be the worst because it simply didn’t rhyme completely. There’s no “L” sound at the end. In another group it could have done better, but not here.

6) “Hard in the paint is his style” = Bam Adebayo

This is another clever one but it doesn’t really rhyme, especially because he said “style” as a two-syllable word to make it work. It just sneaks ahead of Mitchell though.

5) “They did it proudly” = Kyle Lowry

Same as Adebayo, doesn’t actually rhyme completely. And less creativity because “they did it proudly” is a very weird phrase to say, it’s just not natural.

4) “He’s an all-time distrupter” = Jimmy Butler

Now the rest of this group is great, so we have to get really picky. Butler has no “p” sound, so we have to knock it a bit, as it falls to #5.

3) “Representing the Bayou Kingdom” = Brandon Ingram

A great rhyme, but no “d” sound in Ingram. Still has great creativity with the context of “Bayou Kingdom” so I liked this one a little better

2) “He’ll get it done” – Kris Middleton

Very creative. He could easily take the easy out and just rhymed “ton” but was able to get the “middle” part in there in this phrase. Probably would’ve won in any other group, but this one had a great rhyme.

1) “Oh contraire-au fraire” = Rudy Gobert

A great rhyme. It’s hard to rhyme Gobert, but to do it with a French phrase is even better. It creates some uniqueness, and highlight’s his rhyming abilities as well. Probably a top 3 introduction.

Starters

5) “Big skills, yes indeed” = Joel Embiid

Not really personal to Joel, you could use that on any player that has a name rhyming with indeed. It also doesn’t quite rhyme so that’s an extra knock.

4) “He’s only just begun” = Trae Young

I mean it’s kinda personal to Trae because he’s a sophomore but begun and Young is a bit of a stretch. Given the other three, this had to be knocked down.

3) “He’s ready to rock em” = Pascal Siakam

“Rock em Siakam” is a phrase I’ll probably say often through the rest of the year. Very good. But given that the last two players are great rhymes by Common, this had to be 3rd.

2) “Handles the rock like Gibralter” = Kemba Walker

What an insane reference to the Rock of Gibraltar. Walker seemed like an easy one but Common took it to another level. This is my second favorite one, but you can’t top a rhyme over Antetekoumpo.

1) “Drive the lane with no refusal” = Antetekoumpo

Listen. If you asked me to rhyme this dude’s last name I would walk out the door in an instant. Credit to Common, this was by far the hardest one and he nailed it.

Western Conference

Reserves

7) “On the court he can kill it” = Dame Lillard

This hardly rhymes, and that’s putting it generously. Also he’s not even playing so I feel comfortable putting Dame at the end. Sorry not sorry.

6) “He’s a general with the ball” = Chris Paul

Are you kidding me? You couldn’t at least get “Chris” in there somehow? The biggest cop out of the night BY FAR. I expected better for my man.

5) “Outside he’s a pressure cooker” = Devin Booker

Another huge cop out tonight, plus Booker isn’t really an All-Star. Give me all the shade you want, it’s the truth.

4) “He’s always all about winnin” = Ben Simmons

A pretty big cop out as well, and also doesn’t quite work with the “s” part of Simmons.

3) “He’ll give you a dosage” = Nikola Jokic

This one just lost to Tatum because, while it’s pretty creative, it just doesn’t quite rhyme. When you get down to it, we have to consider the completeness of each rhyme and this one didn’t quite make it.

2) “You can’t overstate him” = Jayson Tatum

I enjoy when the first of a two-syllable word is used in a rhyme, and this is a good one. But Tatum isn’t the most challenging word to rhyme, so it didn’t quite win.

1) “He knew he’d be an All-Star from everything he’s shown us” = Domantas Sabonis

Incredible. Sabonis is a three-syllable word and a difficult one to rhyme, but he got each syllable in there. And it is personal to Sabonis, he HAS proven himself to be an All-Star.

Starters

5) “On the court he gives a clinic” = Kawhi Leonard

THE WORST ONE OF THE ENTIRE NIGHT. THESE TWO WORDS DO NOT RHYME AT ALL.

4) “One of the generation’s greatest” = Anthony Davis

Davis seems pretty easy to rhyme and they just didn’t do it. Plus this is a VERY generic phrase, you could use that on any one of these All-Stars.

3) “We continue to witness his reign” = Lebron James

Lebron will always have a knock in these type of rankings because James is really easy to rhyme. Unfortunately, that’s just the way it will always be. But kudos to 16 straight years in the ASG. That’s legit awesome.

2) “Breaks ankles with no pardon” = James Harden

Definitely a creative rhyme, and not one I wouldn’t have thought to use. It’s also got some personal component so that always gets a bump.

1) “Keeps the defense honest” = Doncic

Definitely the best of this bunch. Doncic is another really tough one, and that’s one of the few words that actually works. Kudos again.

Chicago Reporter Completely Fabricated a Greg Popovich Story using a Thunder Reporter’s Photo

I’ve seen plenty of Twitter accounts steal content – video edits, graphics, you name it. But I never thought anyone would be dumb enough to attempt this.

After the Spurs game in OKC on February 11th, OKC Thunder reporter Addam Francisco (@SuaveFrancisco_) took a photo of Popovich.

A totally innocent photo. Just caught Popovich styling a little.

But then a Chicago reporter thought he could use the same photo and get away with it.

This is honestly insane. People steal photos constantly, but he even pretended like he had a story with Popovich. It’s one thing to use the photo and say “Look Popovich had this Pelle jacket on”, but it’s another to say “I took Popovich to K-Town and we got this jacket together”.

Really? You and Popovich just a had a nice stroll together? Why do you feel the need to make this up? And why would you use a photo that someone else took to try and verify it? Did you think no one would notice?

The whole think blows my mind. It’s almost sociopathic behavior. Obviously, this act is basically harmless, but the way in which he tweeted out someone’s photo with an almost hubristic lack of caution for the consequences is puzzling. On top of that, he completely fabricated a story for clicks and engagements. And it worked.

This is the part of the article where I was going to show what I dug up on Jason Goff, currently hired as an “impact player” for NBC Chicago. I don’t see what good that would do, so I’ll just say that this little charade that happened last night doesn’t surprise me. Like many others online, the temptation to do anything and everything for clicks and engagement has become too much for this Chicago reporter.

We Just Watched An All-Time Performance Between Two Future Dynasties

I seriously cannot believe we all thought a team with an outstanding coach, a Hall of Fame floor general, and an elite shooter was going to be in the lottery next year. We are all idiots.

This was such an incredible game for so many reasons. Obviously, it was a nail–biter til the very end. But what’s more amazing is watching two teams at the very early stages of rebuilding, already showing us flashes of incredible talent.

Billy Donovan coached a flawless game tonight. He constantly exposed the Pelicans’ mismatch guarding Gallinari, as he ended up with 29 points on 12/18 shooting. They had no answer for him the entire game. Zion hit another career high tonight with 32 points and was equally unstoppable. Lu Dort was completely shutting down Jrue Holiday, and even had a nice 3PT shot, which is always a pleasant surprise. Dennis was having his way at the rim with his unmatched speed, putting in 22 points himself.

Chris Paul managed tf out of this game, garnering 14 points, 12 assists, and 8 rebounds. Dangerously close to a triple-double. But more importantly, he was getting the ball to the guys who needed it, including Ferguson. Yes, he’s not shooting the ball well, but CP3 knows that he needs to keep shooting through the slump, and that he did. Sometimes even forcefully. He is the exact definition of a floor general.

This was a huge win. Coming off a two-game losing skid, it felt like this last game before the All-Star weekend would really set the tone into the final third of the season. Now, we go into the break with a great victory against a very young, talented organization. That completely changes the mood around this group and will pay dividends.

OKC now sits 1.5 games back of the Rockets in the 5th seed. We have much to cover before our next game, but it will be a tough one against the Nuggets next Friday (yes, we have 8 days off). For now, let’s enjoy SGA in the Rising Stars game and CP3 in his return to the All-Star game this weekend.

As always, THUNDER UP

I’m Terrified of Zion Williamson

Listen, I sat down to write this blog with the objective of finding any and all statistics against Zion to give OKC fans some hope. We’ve lost two straight and the people are acting like we just traded away our franchise point guard… hypothetically speaking, of course.

I went deep into Zion’s splits statistics. How does he perform on a Thursday? What about when he’s had one day of rest? How does he shoot when guarded by a defender not born in the US? All of these statistics came out remarkably positive for Zion. He’s just so damn good.

We released a preview podcast yesterday with Pelicans color commentator and recurring guest Antonio Daniels which you can find here. When asked who will guard Zion in tonight’s matchup with the Thunder, and what was his answer? Basically, you can’t. But because it would be very bold to not put anyone on Zion, Steven Adams is the best option. Adams is far too slow, but someone like SGA is far too small. It’s terrifying. Thus, I’m terrified.

Episode 211 of Topic: Thunder featuring Antonio Daniels

We haven’t even discussed skinny-wannabe-Paul-George-turned-All-Star Brandon Ingram, who basically already won Most Improved Player. The dude is averaging 25 PPG on 47/40/87 splits, grabbing 6.4 rebounds, and dishing 4.2 assists. He’s become Siakam with more range and that, too, is terrifying. Then there’s Jrue, Lonzo, and crybaby Jaxson Hayes. Combined, there’s lot to deal with here.

That said, Pelicans are -3.5 tonight. I’m putting all my money on OKC covering that spread. Vegas always overhypes Zion, despite his already great performances. Easy money in the bank.

Darius Bazley is Out 4-6 Weeks, Who Will Replace Him? Here are Three Options

Most known for posterizing Joel Embiid, Darius Bazley finally hits the injury bug – a knee bone bruise, and will have 4-6 weeks to work on his Tik Tok profile.

It was just awkward contact by a Celtics player early in the 1st half, which stretched the bench thin the remainder of the game. Now, Billy Donovan will be making adjustments to fill in Bazley’s absence, which is usually about 17 minutes per game. There’s really only a few candidates given this team’s depth.

Mike Muscala

Listen. Muscala gets a lot of hate. By I have a statistic that will blow your flipping mind. There are only three 5-man lineups that include CP3, SGA, Schroder, and Gallinari. Those three lineups are with Steven Adams, Nerlens Noel, or Mike Muscala. Want to guess which lineup has the highest net points per 100 possessions?

PlayerMinutes playedNet points
Steven Adams145+26.7
Nerlens Noel72+24.7
Mike Muscala38+59.0
Net points per 100 possessions when CP3, SGA, Schroder, and Gallinari in the lineup

Obviously the minutes could be skewing things a bit, but 59 points? This has to be good, right? Right? RIGHT?

Isaiah Roby

According to ESPN Fantasy, Roby is ranked 95th at his position. I can’t imagine there’s more than 95 shooting forwards in the NBA. Troublesome. The statistics from his only NBA game, you ask? It was a Tony Snell special but with significantly fewer minutes.

Image

However, Sam Presti didn’t have to trade Justin Patton for this guy, so he must see something in him. Turns out, this guy shows great potential as an outside shooter and as an all-around hustle guy. Check out the 2nd half highlights from this recent OKC Blue game vs the Kings

(Unrelated: The announcers and this game are amazing. The play-by-play guy makes every single play electric, and Nick Gallo is the color guy? Love it.)

All this to say that Roby hasn’t had too many opportunities to prove himself yet, but he has the potential to be a hidden gem.

Small Ball

One adjustment that has done wonders for Billy Donovan is the three guard lineup of SGA, Shai, and CP3 to end games. They are the best three-man lineup in terms of net rating, and we could see that come into play more with Bazley’s absence.

Don’t be surprised to see Billy go small with Ferg, Diallo, and Dort getting extra minutes with the 3-guard lineup (we still need a good nickname for that group, btw). We know that Diallo has been antsy to get more time, and with Dort’s rise in this rotation things have been a little cramped. This is a nice opportunity to give these guards some more area to develop.

This is all to say that we’ll be fine. Bazley has been a pleasant change from what we’ve usually seen in our rookies, but he’s still very far from a starting position. For now, enjoy these highlights from his season thus far.

Joel Embiid makes a smart business decision to not try and block Bazley

I’m Heartbroken for the Miami Heat Who Lost Because Danilo Gallinari was not in the Lineup Tonight

The Portland Trailblazers, alongside Damian Lillard’s 33 points, defeated the Miami Heat 115-109.

Unfortunately, Gallinari was not in the Miami lineup tonight due to personal reasons – he scored 24 points on 8/14 FG and 3/6 3PT during a scheduled game in the midwest region. His absence was surely missed last night as the Miami Heat lost to a Western Conference team that is not currently in the playoffs.

As we look ahead to the remaining schedule following the All-Star break, the Heat are only two games behind Philadelphia in the 5th seed, and are three games back from Boston for the 3rd seed. Every game matters, and tonight was an especially important game for this Eastern Conference juggernaut.

These type of losses make you reminisce about what could have been. What if we haven’t been so stringent with Gallinari’s contract request? What if we just gave him the 3-year deal he wanted, rather than a 1+1 team option? These are the questions swirling through the heads of the Miami folk as they stroll to work this Monday morning. Unfortunately, there are no answers that can quench this Miami Heat.

I pray these unfortunate events turnaround. Heaven forbid this team falls further down the standings.

NBA Finals Preview Ends with Kemba Eruption

Prior to the last 5 minutes of the game, Kemba Walker was 2/7 from 3PT. Clearly that didn’t sit well with him, because he proceeded to make two incredibly difficult shots behind the arc, essentially icing the game.

The Thunder offense was humming for most of the game. Gallinari was rubbing it in Miami’s face with some fantastic shooting, SGA was taking control in key parts of the game, and CP3 was just doing what CP3 always does: cash money from midrange. But it wasn’t enough, particularly due to the rebounding by Boston and the some horribly missed bunny shots by OKC.

The Turkish member of the ‘stache bros was getting crucial rebounds all night. Eight to be exact. Jayson Tatum, Daniel Theis, Gordon Hayward all ended with double digit rebounds as well. Boston was +9 in rebounds, +5 in assists, and +3 in steals. It was a competitive game with 20 lead changes throughout, but ultimately Kemba and the Celtics made the final push to end it.

Despite the loss, OKC played to the wire against the title contenders of the East. They look to bounce back in San Antonio on Tuesday evening.

Kevin Durant Tarnishes the Name of Thunder Legend Anthony Morrow

It’s not worth my time to discuss why this is complete dog doodoo. There’s multiple sources confirming you talked with OKC players before deciding to sign with Golden State saying he wanted to come back. This is just a worse version of that lie.

What must be discussed is this man’s nerve to tarnish the name of Anthony Morrow. No shooters? Only guy that make 3’s? Well, let’s take a look at some stats.

To be honest, none of this really matters. OKC has moved on. We have a bright future ahead with players that far less likely to be sociopathic liars. The reason I even discuss this is to keep the Thunder legend Anthony Morrow above these garbage allegations. It’s just shameful.

This is a new low point, KD.

The NBA is Seriously Regretting Inviting Dame Dolla to Perform at the All-Star Game After this Horrible Call

After last night’s victory against Cleveland, the Thunder were smelling blood for the fourth seed in the West. Utah was on a 5-game losing streak, and Houston just lost to the Suns because Kelly Oubre was taller than every active player on the Rockets (but seriously they were out rebounded 41-21). OKC was now one game back of each team.

The west coast matchup between Utah and Portland was an opportunity to get within half a game of the Jazz for the 5th seed. Things were looking good – Portland had a 16-point lead early in the second half, but Utah came roaring back in the 3rd quarter. Then Damian Lillard went nuclear.

Lillard had a look in his eyes that OKC knows far too well. He’s been on an MVP tear the last month, averaging 35.6 PPG on 50% FG and 47% 3PT. Just insane numbers. It felt like he was gonna do it again. But then this happened.

Now I try to give referees the benefit of the doubt. It’s a tough job trying to make the right calls consistently in a split second. But this is one of those calls that was just wrong.

One note is that this goal tend is difficult to see at certain angles. If you notice, one ref is on the baseline, the other at the top of the arc. Both are fairly perpendicular to the basket, which is not a great visual perspective to witness this goal tend. That said, the fact that Portland could not challenge a no-call is what makes this particularly aggravating. Refs are gonna miss some plays, so when it comes down to a win or loss in the final seconds, there needs to be a way to correct those misses during the game.

As one can imagine, Lillard was not too pleased.

It should be noted that Lillard was invited to perform his music at the NBA All-Star game next week. I can’t imagine this is going to go over very well now. Yikes.

Now everyone knows I’m a huge Lillard fan. He gave the Thunder one of the greatest rebuilds we’ve seen in our lifetime. They are currently on pace to win around 50 games, something we have only seen once in the last five seasons. So it’s no secret that I’m 100% on board with Lillard here. They’re fighting for their lives to get into the playoffs, and every game matters. If they fall short by a single game, this will be the one they will remember.

Was it the worst call of all-time? No. Not even close. Remember when Kevin Durant’s entire body was out of bounds and the refs were totally chill about it?

Chris Paul Made A Little Girl Cry with this Heinous Act

Wednesday night after the OKC Thunder won against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Chris Paul brought a little girl to tears. Many say she was crying tears of joy. I say you can’t assume someone’s emotions. How dare you.

First, let’s consider the following. Chris Paul just notched 12 points (4-9FG) and 7 assists. That’s one sweaty jersey. CP3 basically handed over a smelly piece of fabric to an innocent child. What if I came over to you and handed you my socks that have been worn three times without washing them? Why haven’t I washed them is none of your damn business. Just take them. That’s basically what Chris Paul did.

Second, let’s acknowledge her own jersey. To the simple-minded, the last name “Paul” on her back might indicate that she is a fan of CP3. However, she could very easily be a Brandon Paul fan. Yes, THE Brandon Paul.

Noted NBA Legend Brandon Paul

So next time you film a girl crying because a random basketball player threw his sweaty garments at her, maybe have some respect. You don’t know what she’s going through. It’s simply sickening to see people who try to use these situations for social media engagement.

Many T’s and P’s to this girl and her family. Hopefully that stench doesn’t linger for too long.
